Some call it a myth, a founding/shaping story, a piece of propaganda. So let's dive in, search its depths, and let it shape us! Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7

When I hide my sin, I get old and dry inside, sin as in not merely my actions, but my tendency to try to run my life myself--old and dry. Psalm 32

Under the reign of sin and death, humans are the reigned over, but when grace reigns, the humans reign in life. Romans 5:12-19

For Eve, David, and Jesus, the temptation was to find something besides God good, pleasant, and desired. Matthew 4:1-11

For Eve, David, and Jesus, the temptation twisted the good into object, the pleasant into obsession, and the desire into punctilliar achievement. Matthew 4:1-11

Admitting is such a powerful word: opening to hospitality, or breaking through to authenticity despite fault or loss or insufficiency. Psalm 32

Think of a metaphor today by which to explain or describe an idea or cause you care about. Romans 5:12-19

The bad choice is often but a twisted, tainted, tangential, truncated, or intemperate form of the good choice. Matthew 4:1-11

Bible Reading Group Homework

1.    What do you think when you think of the blessed afterlife, sometimes called paradise, or heaven? Discuss together the images various people have for this.

2.    Read or listen to Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7. For many, this is the origination story for good and bad in our world. Describe your feelings about this story and listen to others describe theirs.

3.    Read or listen to Psalm 32. (Remind yourself of David’s sin, see 1 Samuel 11 and 12). After noticing David’s description of how he felt, describe in your own words how you feel before you become willing to admit a wrong you have done.

4.    Read or listen to Matthew 4:1-11. Dig down in your imagination to the core of these temptations by the devil to Jesus. For Eve, David, and Jesus, the temptation was to find something besides God good, pleasant, and desired. The temptation twisted the good into object, the pleasant into obsession, and the desire into punctilliar achievement. How did Jesus turn away the temptations and the tempter?

5.    Read or listen to Romans 5:12-19. This is one of Paul’s tongue and mind twisters that scholars have discussed for centuries. One thing is clear, a comparison and contrast between what Adam did and what Christ did for the world. So look for the words like reign, rule, dominate, and dominion. Who or what rules because of what Christ did? What is your response?
