The land God promised to Abraham, from the Nile to the Euphrates, was later occupied by his two sons, Ishamael (Midian) and Israel, then ruled by Solomon (1 Kings 4:21), and now still occupied by Abraham's descendants. Genesis 15:1-2, 17-18

When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.” I will learn from You. I will wait on You. Psalm 27 (NASB).

Jesus is able to subdue all things to himself. Herein lies my hope. Philippians 3:17-4:1

In the valley after being on the mountain, Jesus met the devil and then the disciples, who couldn't understand, who quarreled among themselves, who excluded a good worker, and who proposed a retaliation. Luke 9:37-45

Thoughts about Listening

Owning a piece of land means different things to differing people. Genesis 15:1-2, 17-18

How do you listen when the other person isn't talking? Wait! Psalm 27

Good to consider what rules me: lust or appetite, fear or shame, or the acquisition or care of things. Or is there something higher? Philippians 3:17-4:1

When I fail to listen well, I open the door for quarreling, exclusion, and retaliation. Luke 9:37-45

Bible Reading Group Study Guide

1.    How does authority work in your life? Tell your group about someone over whom you have authority, or who has authority over you.

2.    Read or listen to Genesis 15:1-2, 17-18. Look on a map to find the area between the Nile River and the Euphrates River as the area promised to Abraham’s descendants. Do you think God kept his promise?

3.    Read or listen to Psalm 27. Choose and discuss one or two phrases meaningful to you from this psalm.

4.    Read or listen to Philippians 3:17-4:1. Over how much can Jesus have authority? Compare Matthew 28:18.

5.    Read or listen to Luke 9:37-45. Draw or dramatize the story. Who didn’t have authority and who did have authority in this story? A bit of time after this episode, Jesus tried again to tell his disciples about his soon-coming sufferings and they did not understand. To whom will you give understanding and authority in your life?
