There's a lot of turning and returning in the first chapter of Ruth, signaling reversal as a primary theme of this story. The Hebrew word for "turn" is also translated "repent." Ruth 1:1-18

I'm older now; some of my family and friends have died. Helps me understand Psalm146 about not trusting in mortal humans more than in God.

Jesus is more to be clung to and more effective toward a clean conscience than all the holy places, things, or actions that I could imagine. Hebrews 9:11-14

Pondering why Jesus only here spoke, and only Mark recorded, the first part of the famous Jewish Shema, "Hear O Israel. . . ," making this story longer in Mark than in any other Gospel. Mark 12:28-34

Bible Reading Group Study Guide

1.    Is there someone whose presence you miss, whose life you remember? Find someone who will listen as you remember.

2.    Read or listen to Ruth 1:1-18. “Bethlehem” means “house of bread”; why did the family move away? Who died while they were away? How did Naomi say Ruth and Orpah had treated their husbands and herself, their mother-in-law. Describe the feelings of each of these three.

3.    Read or listen to Psalm 146. What did the psalmist say she or he would do as long as he or she lives? Why?

4.    Read or listen to Hebrews 9:11-14. Death and drudge is not our inheritance in Christ. Tell your group what difference Jesus Christ makes in your life and hopefulness.

5.    Read or listen to Mark 12:28-34. Find and read the writings as Jesus quoted them from Moses: Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Leviticus 19:18. How did the scribe rephrase what Jesus said? What was Jesus’ response and the crowds’ response? What do you think they meant? What do those responses mean in your life today?
