The heart of her husband safely trusts in her. Name some Old Testament women who could be described as virtuous women according to Proverbs 31:10-31.

The same way God knows a tree, from core to bark and from rootlet to leaf, so the Lord knows me. Psalm 1

Envy leads to murders. But life is not about getting things. If we simply ask, we will receive. Then we can live and work together in humility and grace given by God. James 3:13-4:3, 7-8

It is the drive to be first compared to others that I ask the Holy Spirit to kill in me. The drive to develop all my potential to the fullest is Holy Spirit instilled. Mark 9:30-37

Thoughts about Listening

Trust and praise from a husband to his wife is something glorious to behold. Proverbs 31:10-31

I choose not to make close friends for myself among those whose communication depends on scorn, mockery, and flippancy. Psalm 1

Two different ways to live: by envy in a world of competition for scarce resources, or by humility in a world of generosity with abundant resources. I can choose. James 3:13-4:3, 7-8

Give to the gentle. Mark 9:30-37

Bible Reading Group Study Guide

1.    Take a few minutes in your group to try to describe wisdom, the kind of wise person you like to be around.

2.    Read or listen to Proverbs 31:10-31. Pick some part of this description that especially pleases or puzzles you, then discuss together this virtue’s benefits and possible liabilities.

3.    Read or listen to Psalm 1. This could be fun to read together and listen to the group’s voices. Much wisdom writing pictures two sets: virtues and vices, wise and foolish, etc. How would you label the two sets pictured here?

4.    Read or listen to James 3:13-4:3, 7-8. Here the two sets are labeled “earthly wisdom” and “wisdom from above.” Look in verses 7-10 to list and discuss some ways to gain the wisdom from above.

5.    Read or listen to Mark 9:30-37. As a group, work to paraphrase this reading so as to highlight some virtue and its opposite. Use the ideas here, choose one of several possible focuses, say the segment in your own words as a “wisdom” saying, with opposites. Then imagine yourself standing in the crowd watching Jesus in this interchange with his disciples. How will your perspective be changed?

*************
